Transportation & Global Warming Human burning of fossil fuels has released additional heat trapping gases (CO2, NO2, etc.) into the atmosphere resulting in increasing global temperatures. The scale and speed of this climatic change will have profound effects on communities, ecosystems, and international relations between countries.
Source: Climate Solutions [www.climatesolutions.org] Despite home to only 6-7% of the world's population, North America (U.S., Mexico and Canada) emits 28% of world's greenhouse emissions. The U.S. accounts for 86% of North America's total emissions. Transportation contributes enormously to climate change. About one third of all greenhouse gas emissions come from cars, trucks, planes and other vehicles propelled by fossil fuels. In West Coast states that proportion can double. The transportation sectors emissions come almost exclusively from petroleum. For instance, Washington transportation generates 60% of the state’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Half of California GHGs come from vehicles. West Coast electrical generation is cleaner than other regions with a higher share of coal-fired power plants, so transportation represents a larger share of the GHG challenge here. Learn more . . . Transportation & Oil
dependence
Learn more on the real cost of oil from the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security (IAGS) Transportation consumes more oil that all other sectors of the U.S. economy combined. Yet, while we have made great strides to reduce oil use our industries and buildings, the U.S. has eliminated vehicle standards and favors road building to investments in transit.
Source: www.setamericafree.org/facts.htm While Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) countries produce about 40% of the world's oil, they hold 80% of proven global reserves, and 85% of these reserves are in the Middle East.
